Merriwa Post Office

Post Office

In 2026 the closure of Merriwa’s post office became a real possiblity. The MDPA wrote to a range of local, state and federal authorities in an attempt to ensure the post office did not close. Fortunately, a local business owner has stepped forward and taken over the licence of the post office.

IGA Laneway

IGA Laneway

Over several months the MDPA joined with other community voices to argue at Council meetings that the laneway leading to the back of IGA (at the rear of the Bettington St Shops) should not be reduced in width in order to facilitate accommodation.

We argued that the Council should adhere to its original plans to acquire the land and ensure a laneway was gazetted. Council has agreed to acquire the land and gazette the laneway. We continue to monitor this.

Wool Processing Plant

Wool Processing Plant

The Merriwa District Progress Association sought funding for a feasibility study regarding the Wool Processing Plant. Unfortunately, despite a significant amount of work, we were unsuccessful in obtaining the funding.

Gummun Place

Gummun Place

After a good deal of community engagement, Gummun Place remains in the hands of the Trustee (Upper Hunter Shire Council). Although it no longer operates as a registered aged care facility, it is available to residents as a hostel under a Home Care package.
